Vericoolers Eliminate 60 Tractor-Trailers Worth of Toxic Polystyrene in 2017

Vericool Customers Provide a Much Needed Second Chance for Humanity

Livermore, Calif. — December 29, 2017— In the U.S., millions upon millions of tons of toxic expanded polystyrene (EPS) foam, commonly referred as Styrofoam, ends up in landfills and waterways each year—harming humans, wildlife and their ecosystems, and costing society $7 billion annually. To give people, companies and the planet a second chance, Vericool launched earlier this year the world’s first line of high-performance, low-cost, recyclable and compostable cold chain packaging—Vericoolers. The response has been overwhelming. More and more food, pharmaceutical, meal kit and health companies are signing up as customers, including TF Scientific, Habit, Raw Living Spirulina, Osso Good, Achaogen, Healthy Goodness, Butcher Box and among others.

“EPS foam is dangerous and it’s wrecking our environment,” said Darrell Jobe, CEO of Vericool. “There’s absolutely no reason why companies shouldn’t switch to our Vericoolers.”

EPS foam has been used for decades for cold chain shipping, because it is lightweight, insulating, durable and cheap. The same properties that make EPS foam useful also make it extremely hard to recycle, contributing to its accumulation in landfills and waterways. Plus, 22 states don’t even have recycling locations.

Alarmingly, the compounds used in EPS foam’s production—benzene and styrene—have been identified as harmful to human health with neurological effects and increased risk of cancers from prolonged exposure. Because EPS foam is so light, it easily breaks into tiny pieces, increasing clean-up costs and risks to wildlife and humans. Disturbingly, research studies have found that all humans have trace amounts of styrene in their fat tissue.

The perfect alternative to EPS foam packaging, the company’s new Vericooler III keeps products cold from packaging to receipt, and significantly reduces landfill waste for about the same cost as using toxic EPS foam. Made from post-consumer plant fiber, the Vericooler III can easy be curbside recycled and will biodegrade in months, as opposed to decades for EPS foam. The innovative packaging is moisture-resistant, and has a molded design that virtually eliminates thermal edge loss, significantly reducing the amount of required coolant and total packed weight.

Vericool was able to meet our needs in creating a fully customized, green shipping box that aligns with the values that we hold dear as a company,” said Toran Hilmer, co-founder of Osso Good. “Not only that, but the box performs BETTER than our previous thermal lined boxes and is cheaper! We are excited to continue to have such an innovative company as a partner.

For the food and meal subscription industry, companies using the Vericooler III can focus on the quality of their food, instead of their shipment’s safety. The Vericooler III is proven to keep cold food at the proper temperature during shipment (fresh, frozen or combined). Customers also appreciate that the packaging is truly sustainable and customizable based on their shipping needs.

“Raw Living Spirulina is a company whose mission is to change the health of humanity without destroying the health of the planet by providing nature’s most perfect food to all that seek life. When a company sets a mission like this in motion, stars must align. Vericool and Raw Living Spirulina are those stars,” said Timothy White, owner of Raw Living Spirulina. “Our customers feedback using the Vericool boxes were beyond our expectations. Both the temperature and condition of Raw Living Spirulina was the best ever, literally twice as cold as our previous Styrofoam boxes.”

In the pharmaceutical and health industries, companies have been hesitant to move away from EPS foam for fear that alternative packaging will compromise the safety of their products. However, the Vericooler III’s thermal performance matches that of EPS foam and is proven to keep medicines, vaccines and biological products cold up to the critical 96-hour range.

Working with its customers, Vericool has set a goal to annually prevent 360,000 metric tons of EPS foam pollution. While it’s helpful that countries, states, and counties continue to ban EPS, there is more to be done. Vericoolers are not just a product, it’s a second chance movement—a very cool way to improve the health and well-being of people and our planet through packaging.
