Livermore, Calif. — December 29, 2017— In the U.S., millions upon millions of tons of toxic expanded polystyrene (EPS) foam, commonly referred as Styrofoam, ends up in landfills and waterways each year—harming humans, wildlife and their ecosystems, and costing society $7 billion annually. EPS foam has been used for decades for cold chain shipping, because it is lightweight, insulating, durable and cheap. The same properties that make EPS foam useful also make it extremely hard to recycle, contributing to its accumulation in landfills and waterways. Plus, 22 states don’t even have recycling locations.

Alarmingly, the compounds used in EPS foam’s production—benzene and styrene—have been identified as harmful to human health with neurological effects and increased risk of cancers from prolonged exposure. Because EPS foam is so light, it easily breaks into tiny pieces, increasing clean-up costs and risks to wildlife and humans. Disturbingly, research studies have found that all humans have trace amounts of styrene in their fat tissue.

The perfect alternative to EPS foam packaging, the company’s new Vericooler III keeps products cold from packaging to receipt, and significantly reduces landfill waste for about the same cost as using toxic EPS foam. Made from post-consumer plant fiber, the Vericooler III can easy be curbside recycled and will biodegrade in months, as opposed to decades for EPS foam. The innovative packaging is moisture-resistant, and has a molded design that virtually eliminates thermal edge loss, significantly reducing the amount of required coolant and total packed weight.
